There are many well known and documented strategies one can apply in designing a garden. For this discussion we will use a thought process familiar to many in planning your next dinner party - who to invite, how to set the table, who sits next to whom - and apply the process to setting a garden in motion. The discussion will include one of the newer trends in garden design, understanding Plant Sociability, or how an individual plant's behaviors for holding its ground or spreading, will guide you in selecting, placing and maintaining plants in your garden.
Lisa McDonald Hanes is a founding partner of TEND landscape architects and co-owner/operator of Redbud Native Plant Nursery in Media, Pennsylvania.
