Color is a powerful element in landscape design, capable of transforming the feel and flow of an outdoor space. When used intentionally, it can create visual balance, draw attention to focal points, and stir a range of emotions. Yet, some of the most beautiful moments arise from unplanned compositions. In “My Coloring Book,” Joe Henderson encourages us to celebrate these happy accidents, infuse our gardens with personal flair, and think creatively about color. It’s an invitation to explore, express, and connect with nature through vibrant, unexpected combinations.
Joe Henderson is a horticulturist at Chanticleer Garden, where he has spent more than 25 years cultivating and shaping areas such as the ponds, rock ledge, and Asian woodland. With a background in plant science from the University of Delaware, Joe brings both technical expertise and creative vision to his work. Originally trained as a jeweler, he carries that precision and artistry into his gardening, adopting a “jewel box” approach that emphasizes rich color, layered design, and visual texture. During the off-season, he channels his creativity into making custom metal and woodwork pieces for outdoor spaces.
